Qualification, by contrast, offers a structured, accredited programme grounded in evidence, depth, and rigour. It enables colleagues to build real expertise and apply it directly in their roles — whether they are teachers, teaching assistants, senior leaders or pastoral staff.
Because these qualifications are designed specifically for school settings, they fit seamlessly into existing structures and routines. That means colleagues can drive change from within, without stepping outside their role or compromising their core responsibilities. This is what makes school mental health qualifications so powerful — they’re not just relevant; they’re transformational.
The Limitations of One-Off Training
All too often, school staff receive generalist mental health CPD with no follow-up, no accountability, and no opportunity to apply learning in a way that suits their setting. This lack of structure leads to:
- Inconsistent or ad-hoc responses across the school
- Shallow understanding of complex pupil wellbeing needs
- Staff burnout caused by unclear expectations and minimal support
A tick-box approach won’t solve a growing, complex challenge. Schools need something deeper — accredited professional development that builds capacity from within.

A New Pathway for Schools and Staff
That’s why we developed the School Mental Health Qualifications Framework — the first structured progression route for school staff looking to lead in mental health:
- Level 2 Award: Mental Health Foundation or Peer Mentoring
- Level 5 Diploma: School Mental Health Practitioner
- Level 7 Postgraduate Certificate / MA: School Mental Health Specialist
These qualifications are built specifically for school settings and validated by leading bodies, including the Royal Society for Public Health and the Carnegie School of Education at Leeds Beckett University.
