The connection between staff wellbeing and student success is no longer a theory – it’s proven.
A growing body of research confirms what many in education have long believed: when teachers feel supported, energised and connected, student learning improves dramatically. Staff wellbeing is not a luxury or a bonus. It’s a prerequisite for a healthy, high-performing school.
What the Research Shows
📚 A study from the University of York found clear links between teacher wellbeing and student engagement, behaviour and attainment. Alarmingly, students taught by stressed or burnt-out teachers were shown to have higher cortisol levels, a physiological sign of stress.
🌍 The International Baccalaureate (IB) reports that schools prioritising staff wellbeing see improvements in teaching quality and student outcomes.
🌐 The OECD has highlighted how stress and burnout contribute to high teacher turnover and absence, which in turn disrupt student learning and lower attainment.
Why It Matters
When staff feel valued and supported:
- Absences fall
- Teams remain stable
- Teaching quality becomes more consistent
- Staff-student relationships grow stronger
- School culture improves
In turn, students benefit through:
- More consistent learning
- Deeper trust and connection
- Stronger engagement and behaviour
- Greater resilience and wellbeing
- Improved academic progress
It’s Not Rocket Science
As Dr Helen Kelly says, “It’s common sense.” And yet, in many schools, staff wellbeing remains deprioritised or dismissed as secondary to ‘core’ performance measures.
It’s time to rethink.
If we want young people to flourish, we must start by creating the conditions for staff to thrive. When we do, everyone wins.
