Become a School Mental Health Specialist in Malta

"It is clear from the policymakers as well as school practitioners that I met this year, that there is a real appetite for adopting a holistic approach to school mental health in Malta.

Much like in the UK, there are real mental health needs that need addressing and schools here are well-placed to be able to make impactful changes that strengthen the mental health of the next generation. I am thrilled that we will be able to work further with schools in Malta and look forward to deepening the discussions we have started."

The School Mental Health Specialist programme is a part-time Master’s level degree, exclusively for those working on mental health in schools. Taught entirely remotely, it fits in with the busy commitments of school colleagues. This Master’s course has been developed by Minds Ahead and Leeds Beckett University in the UK and it is registered with the ‘Get Qualified’ Scheme in Malta. On successful completion, students in Malta will benefit from a tax credit (up to 70%), hence recovering part of the costs incurred.

The School Mental Health Specialist programme is the first of its kind, because research has told us that when it comes to having on-site mental health support within the staff team it was very much needed and although there was a range of training courses out there, very few looked at mental health from the school perspective. Staff also told us that they needed in-depth training for two or three years at Masters’ level. Hence the need for a new qualification and a new role within education, the School Mental Health Specialist.

L7 in Malta equate to Master Degree, PG Dip or PG Cert – so yes, the MA (UK Level 7) is equivalent to Level seven on the Maltese Qualifications Framework (MQF).
