Attending graduation at Leeds Beckett University is an honour and a privilege, but this year’s ceremony felt particularly meaningful as it was my first one as a programme lead. As I got near to The Rose Bowl there was a warm mix of excitement and a sense of pride and anticipation. It was lovely to see families gathering for photographs, and staff greeting one another as they met face-to-face for some the first time in a long time.
Days like this are a blend of celebration and reflection, and I was reminded that graduation is not only a milestone for students but also a moment of recognition for everyone involved in their learning.
As the ceremony began, the formalities carried real weight. Hearing students’ names read aloud, each one representing hours of study, personal challenge, professional growth, and moments of doubt overcome, created a powerful sense of collective achievement. It was impossible for me not to feel proud. I have seen students begin their course with trepidation unsure of their academic voice, and here they were now walking confidently across the stage, having already made such an impact in their own setting where they have made a tangible difference.
The presentation to Baroness Anne Longfield of an Honorary Doctor of Education was inspiring and hearing her speak about the “university’s fantastic work in education” was a moment of pride. It was a reminder that higher education is not simply about knowledge acquisition but about shaping people who will go on to influence practice, policy, and wellbeing in their own settings. It did cross my mind that maybe one day one of my students would go on to have such influence.
After the ceremony, I had the opportunity to meet with 2 of our graduates which was a real highlight. I ‘see’ all the students at various points on their academic journey but always online, so to meet in person was quite emotional and a moment to treasure. Watching families celebrate, some emotional, some exuberant, adds another layer of joy. Graduation becomes a shared accomplishment, not just an individual one.
When the day ended and I headed home, I found myself reflecting on a deep sense of fulfilment. Watching another cohort move from learner to graduate, and recognising how our paths, though they cross only briefly, leave such a positive professional impact, is always profoundly meaningful.
Graduation at Leeds Beckett is more than a ceremony; it is a celebration of community, commitment, and the enduring influence of education.
