Research consistently shows that students’ wellbeing plays a crucial role in their ability to learn and succeed (Clarke, 2020; Frazier, 2023; Hinze et al., 2023; Klapp, 2024). In this post-pandemic era, addressing global challenges such as climate change and the fast-paced, evolving digital landscape has made prioritising wellbeing of all members of school communities an essential foundation for effective learning and building resilience to face the future.
At Minds Ahead, we want a future where all schools are inclusive communities where pupils and staff thrive because mental health is well supported, both now and for future generations.
We adopt a holistic view of mental health and well-being to achieve this. This approach considers physical and mental health, socioeconomic factors, and the broader context of each child’s environment. Collaborating with educational practitioners at all levels, we emphasise the importance of creating a whole-school approach tailored to the unique context of each school and individual. Student and staff wellbeing is fundamental to learning; regardless of the quality of learning spaces or the expertise of educational teams, without prioritising wellbeing, optimal outcomes are unlikely.
The HundrED Spotlight Report on Wellbeing in Schools (Warren & Voutilainen, 2025) underscores the need to integrate student wellbeing into educational programmes deliberately. The report offers a comprehensive examination of the evolution of wellbeing and highlights evidence-based interventions that are effective and easy to implement.
Key Conclusions from the HundrED Spotlight Report:
- Schools and education systems need a foundational definition of wellbeing to guide the implementation of new practices. However, this definition must be adapted to fit local contexts.
- Wellbeing assessments should adopt a holistic and subjective understanding of each individual’s needs.
- Student wellbeing should be prioritised as the foundation for academic success, with a “culture of wellbeing” involving all stakeholders – students, parents, and teachers.
- Evidence-based interventions should be selected for their proven effectiveness and ease of implementation within specific contexts.
- Teacher wellbeing is directly linked to student wellbeing, making investment in teacher wellbeing critical.
Minds Ahead’s Alignment with the HundrED Recommendations:
Since its inception eight years ago, Minds Ahead has pursued its vision to empower educational professionals to create environments where everyone belongs, feels understood, and knows how to strengthen their mental health. We believe a new mental health paradigm is essential in education. To address this, we:
- Collaborate with schools and organisations in the UK and internationally to establish a clear and adaptable definition of wellbeing. Our pioneering approach to school mental health uses a whole-school framework that is holistic, strategic, preventive, proactive, and reflective. (Recommendation 1)
- Partner with STEER to offer student cohorts a platform to assess their students’ wellbeing proactively, enabling support for pupil development based on actionable data. (Recommendation 2)
- Deliver evidence-based qualifications that build deep knowledge and skills, guided by sector-leading experts. These qualifications are practical, ensuring participants can apply their learning directly to their contexts. We focus on systemic change and capacity building rather than quick fixes. (Recommendation 3)
- Collaborate with organisations like Lily-Jo and The Children’s University to develop evidence-based peer mentoring programmes that are contextually effective and easy to implement. (Recommendation 4)
- Curate staff wellbeing initiatives, recognising the interconnection between teacher and student wellbeing. Prioritising teacher wellbeing is key to fostering a thriving school community. (Recommendation 5)
A Call to Action:
As educational practitioners, we operate in a challenging environment while striving to foster a culture of care and prioritise holistic wellbeing. Recently, students in our programmes have presented assignments analysing the culture and structure of their settings, with a focus on mental health and wellbeing for all stakeholders. These presentations reflect an unwavering commitment to creating environments where school communities thrive, despite the challenges. They also highlight the importance of grounding efforts in solid evidence to build confidence and encourage participation.
The HundrED Spotlight Report provides an invaluable framework for integrating wellbeing into education. At Minds Ahead, we stand ready to support schools in transforming these recommendations into actionable strategies, ensuring every school community can flourish.
